Fitness Testing Procedures
In the Elmwood Jr/Sr High Physical Education department, we fitness test each student enrolled in PE from 8th Grade through their Senior Year. This testing is done quarterly, so students are tested a minimum of twice a year (Freshmen enrolled in Health and Freshmen/Sophomores enrolled in Driver's Education) and a maximum of four times a year.
We test all five components of physical fitness (Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition). The student's fitness grade is based on the amount of improvement that he/she attains from one testing period to the next. We feel that this is a truer gauge of their fitness improvement rather than a national benchmark. The students have complete control over their improvement.
Cardiovascular Endurance is tested by the number of laps in the gym (around the volleyball court) that they can complete in 12 minutes.
Muscular Strength is done by testing their grip strength using a hand dynamometer.
Muscular Endurance is done by testing how many situps they can complete in 60 seconds.
Flexibility is done by testing the flexibility of their hamstrings and hips by using a sit-and-reach box.
Body Composition is tested by taking the total of four pinch tests with skin calipers at their tricep, bicep, illiac crest,
and at the subscapula.
We use the below charts to calculate the student's fitness improvement and locate that improvement on the adjacent grid.
